Our tour begins in Agia Pelagia at 9am where, after boarding the coach, we will travel to the village of Mylopotamos, situated to the west of Kythira.
Mylopotamos is one of Kythira’s oldest villages and for this reason it has been declared a traditional settlement by the Archaeological Service. We will start our tour at the castle of “Kato Chora” which is located in the oldest neighborhood of Mylopotamos, about 1.3km from where we disembark the coach. On our way to the castle we will pass through the center of Mylopotamos and see the old English school in the square. After we visit the castle we will explore the old houses and numerous chapels, which were still being used as late as the 1950’s. From here, you have an unrivalled view of the gorge and the sea to the west of Kythira; surely one of the best views on the island.
On the way back to the village, we will visit the impressive “Fonissa” waterfall, where the water used to fall from a height of 15 metres (Unfortunately, this has dried up due to the low rainfall in 2016), the green gorge of the watermills, the central square with plane trees and the bell tower of Aghios Charalampos. At this point you have around an hour of free time, where we suggest that nature lovers take a walk to the waterfall, and the more adventurous can try the walk through the gorge to the watermills, while monument enthusiasts should visit the Cave of Aghia Sofia (optional visit by taxi). We will meet back at the central square before we return to the coach.
Next we head to the mountain of Agia Moni, where the imposing monastery is built. The priest, Father Georgis will guide us through the monastery, which was renovated around 1822 by the hero Theodoros Kolokotronis. After the tour, we will take in the breathtaking views of the island before continuing on to Diakofti, the port of Kythira, by coach.
Diakofti’s main attraction is its beautiful beach, which is reminiscent of the “Caribbean”. It is certainly Kythira’s most ideal beach for families, since its crystal clear water is very shallow and safe for children of all ages.
After around 2-hours stay, we will return to Agia Pelagia for about 5pm, where the tour will end.
