Our tour begins in the leafy village of Karavas in the north-east of Kythira. We will make a short stop to take photos and visit the village’s small, yet famous bakery.

From here, we will travel south to the center of the island and visit Mitata, the village that was badly damaged by the 6.9 Richter earthquake in 2006. On our arrival we will have an optional visit to the old olive press “Fava's Liotrivi” (2€ entrance fee). This was one of the oldest olive presses on the island and it has been recently renovated by Eleni Protopsalti and Kostas Pavlakis, the grandchildren of the original owner. Here you can learn about the history of olive oil production on Kythira and watch a short time-lapse video of how the press was rebuilt. You can also purchase some of the local Kytherian products, or even some of the recipe books written by Mr Pavlakis that include traditional Kytherian recipes.

After we leave the olive press we will walk a short distance to the statue of the "Heroes of Mitata" before we visit the “Balcony", the main square in the village with it's breathtaking view. Here you can also see Agia Triada, the church that was irreperably damaged by the earthquake; it remains standing as a unique reminder of the devastating event.

After we leave Mitata, we will continue on to the lovely, picturesque fishing village of Avlemonas. Located on the eastern edge of the island, Avlemonas is perhaps Kythira’s most traditional and best preserved village. Due to the village’s dry climate and architecture, it will feel more like we are somewhere in the Cyclades! In Avlemonas, we suggest that you take a stroll to the fisherman’s port where you will see the "Cavallini Mansion" with the sundial, take a photo at the "vardiola" above the small pier and, of course, walk along the paved path to the small Fortress. There will be plenty of time to swim in the clean water of the village’s small bay, enjoy a coffee at one of the local cafés, or try the freshly caught seafood in one of the restaurants.
